A Bee in My Bonnet

I am a romance writer. Penning a tale about one of the most elemental and natural experiences in life-falling in love-satisfies me. Like many women, I remember the insecurities and seemingly insurmountable roadblocks in the romance that lead to my own personal happily ever after. Reading (and writing) about it rekindles memories and gives me that sweet rush of falling in love again. And according to book sales, I’m not alone. … Read entire article »

Just a Little Crush

I may have jinxed myself. I shouldn’t have bragged about my oh-so-productive muse. She’s been a trial the last two weeks. And she has ADHD. 5,600 words have been added to Boy Next Door since last post. I also started a new novella. I’m 2,500 words into a 15,000-word project. It’s erotica. My muse went all trampy on me. I do have to say, my critique partner seems to be enjoying my temporary diversion. But that just means she’s a tramp as well. She gets all excited when I say I’m sending a chapter. “Which one?! And unlike my … Read entire article »

A Little Tease…

It’s been a very productive week at Casa Laurent. I clocked over 10,000 words in less than six days. The muse has been playing very nicely. Thought I’d share a little excerpt from my current manuscript. It’s, uh, not quite a love scene, but fair warning, it’s ‘PG-13’ bordering on ‘R’. So maybe not something you’d read at work! … Read entire article »

The Good, the Bad and the Ugly (Part II)

Last week, I talked about the challenges and frustrations of a writer trying to ‘get over the wall,’ the wall being a euphemism for going from unpublished author to published author. And that part can be ugly. And frustrating.   But what’s it like on the other side of the wall?   It seems like it’d be fun, right? You get paid for your hard work. You’ll have deadlines to motivate you. You get to see your name in bookstores and at online e-tailors. You’ll finally have earned ‘respect’, received affirmation of your talent. And your next book will be pre-contracted … right?   Eeeeeehhhh. Notsomuch. Not exactly like that anyway. … Read entire article »

The Good, the Bad and the Ugly

It’s been about a year since I finished writing my first book and began the journey toward attempting to get it published. It’s been about six months since I started doing the same with my second manuscript. In publishing reality, that’s not a long time. In Nicole reality, it feels like forever!   Any published author will tell you that before they got published, they could wallpaper their entire house twice over with rejection letters. You need to learn to accept rejection and move on. Many in the industry will tell you it’s a very subjective business. And that’s obvious when you hear the stories about how many times one of your favorite books was rejected before the author found the one agent or publisher who believed in them. … Read entire article »
